Kep Archipelago Hope Spot

The Ocean’s Superhero: Cambodia’s Underwater Meadows

With support from the Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative, conservationists from Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC)are restoring degraded seagrass meadows in the Kep Archipelago. These ecosystems are essential habitats for species like the dugong, the ocean’s largest herbivore.

By deploying artificial reefs and establishing a Marine Fisheries Management Area (MFMA), MCC has helped stop destructive fishing practices such as bottom trawling. Since 2016, over 1,000 hectares of seagrass have regrown, and endangered species like Irrawaddy dolphins, sea turtles, and dugongs have returned.

Recognizing this success, Mission Blue designated the Kep Archipelago as a Hope Spot—an ecologically vital area championed by local communities. MCC’s executive director Rachana Thap and her team have also supported sustainable livelihoods, like oyster farming, engaging locals in conservation efforts and scientific monitoring.

MCC’s model demonstrates how marine restoration is achievable through community empowerment, innovative science, and a deep love for the ocean. Inspired by their impact, the Cambodian government has tasked MCC with deploying 5,000 more artificial reefs along the country’s coastline.
